Cape Dory 22 - The Bottom
Lance has been working on the bottom of the Cape Dory for about 3 weeks now and, as usual, it has turned out to be much more of a job than he expected.
He started out by removing the bottom paint with FranMar Soy Strip for Marine Coatings.
We would recommend this product highly. We had read reviews of numerous strippers online and this name kept coming up. So, we ordered some online and it fully met our expectations. You apply it and wait an hour or so. Lance removed it with the pressure washer and all that was left of the paint was a thin film of color on the gelcoat. He removed the remainder of that with the sander.
I also have a CD 22 I'm fixing up and will be stripping the bottom this spring... How much Soy-Strip did you use? Did you make it with 1 gal or did it take 2 gallons? Thanks, Bill
Hi Bill,
We bought a 2 1/2 gallon jug of the Soy-Strip. We used about 1/2 of it, so it would be a gallon or maybe just a tad more. We had enough left for 1 go round on a Catalina 27 bottom. I don't know if you've ever used it before but we thought it worked really well.
Thanks for writing and good luck with your 22.
(We bought a CD 28 yesterday, so have yet another bottom looming in our future.)
