The Cape Dory 22' is Home

A beautiful sight in the backyard.

The Cape Dory 22 is home!!  And I am happy to report that this evolution went a lot smoother than the trip up to get the trailer.  I wasn’t with Lance when they loaded her onto the trailer, but he says all went well.  The boat fits on the trailer like a hand in a glove and even though we live on a pretty bumpy country road he said the trailer and the boat rode very smoothly.  It’s nice to look out the kitchen window and see her sitting safely there.  As the days ahead get warmer we are gearing up to begin construction.  Projects will be posted here as they proceed.  It is also my intention to post some past projects, especially from our Bristol, so check back from time to time.

I am very interested in knowing how difficult it would be to launch and load the CD22 onto a trailer at a boat ramp.

We have absolutely no experience with launching a sailboat at a ramp (well, other than a really small one).  Our Cape Dory 22 trailer is a lift off, as we plan to keep her in the water during the season anyway.  The idea of having to launch and rig every time we want to go out just doesn't appeal to me at all, and I felt that if we came to view it as too much of a hassle, it may keep us from going out as much.  Hopefully, someone else will respond to  the question, but I cannot answer it.

We had our trailer built by Triad Trailers in New Milford, CT.  Michael Orro is the owner, he builds a lot of trailers for Cape Dories and it fits the boat like a glove.  We were not interested in launching every time we wanted to sail, we mainly just wanted to be able to bring the boat home for the winter and occassionally trailer to a remote cruising ground, so we have the 5200 lb. capacity, single axle, lift off package.  I can't recommend the Triad, or Michael Orro, highly enough.  What a joy they were to work with and what a nice product.  You can contact him at 860-354-1146 to get more specific info about the trailer itself.  I'm sure he could help you with dimensions and all.

Good luck with your CD-22.  What are your cruising grounds?

Our trailer is a 2006 model.  The base price was $3425 for a LIFT-OFF model.  Options we added were:
          bow stop and ladder, $220
          forward mast carrier, $85
          rear stabilizing jacks, 2 @ $75 each
ratchet tie-down straps, $50 for pair
front coupler anti theft lock, $30
          title cost, $55
          Total was $4015.
I would imagine prices have gone up some.  You can contact Michael Orro at Triad for a quote.  He's a joy to work with.  860-354-1146.www.triadtrailers.com

Two questions regarding the trailer: What was the approximate cost and how long did it take from when you ordered to picking it up?

    Thanks!
